Yes CMOS is different from battery it stores your laptop configurations while the battery is the power source to run the battery. Both are batteries but made for different purpose. I am guess that each time you login it ask for password or configuration would indicate a CMOS failure since it stores configuration and password settings for the BIOS as well. And if you do get a eventual BIOS lock then you can as on of the MODs on here and they can tell you the over ride lock password to get it working again. But you will need to check to see if your CMOS battery is still in good condition? ANd how long have you had the laptop?
