Contact HP and they should be able to send you a customized SMC.bin file which you can use at boot to reset the password.

 http://welcome.hp.com/country/w1/en/contact_us.html

When talking to the HP rep ask them to escalate your service request.

Or download these files.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/zu4kdgxm052l87d/AAAMi-kfX4AVH8oTCbsOM4X9a?dl=0

Insert clean USB flash drive.

Then run USB Image tool.

Choose the flash drive then click on RESTORE.

After restore remove flash drive.

Insert flash drive into locked laptop and boot. ”If HDD is installed remove before booting.”

At C:\OUTPUT   type CD..   “Then hit enter”

Type HPBR   “Then hit enter”

First thing is to save your settings.

Select #3 re-program.

Press “S” to save system information.

Type HPBR and hit enter.

Select   “FIRST RUN”

Then select model.

After reboot repeat same as above but this time SELECT “SECOND RUN”

Hi:

HP would not provide recovery media for download.  You would have to order recovery media.

Contact HP for the country you live in at the link below.

http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

You can also try the method described at the link below to clean install W8.1 from the Microsoft download media you can make...Read the info under the heading of:  How to download and clean install Windows 8.1 if you have an OEM computer with UEFI firmware (BIOS) embedded Windows 8/8.1 product key.

The Windows 8.1 .iso now offered by Microsoft at is download page is said to work with OEM licenses which your laptop has. The Key Code is embedded in the BIOS and not visible to you.

Select Windows 8.1 as the download on this page:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

Make a bootable thumb drive. Ignore or skip any dialog asking for a key code and when you get to installed Windows 8.1 it should activate automatically. If you have to choose between Editions do not select Pro. Your license is for plain Windows 8.1 (aka Home or Standard).

Let us know if this works. Once Windows 8.1 is installed drivers are available to download from this site but your wireless card should just install so you have internet access.

Then he didn't fix it. The hard drive is not useable any more and will continue to cause problems.

Hi, Gérard:

If memory serves me right, W8.1 shows up as Windows 8 when you go to install it, but it is really W8.1.

Yes. exactement. One of the many reasons 8/8.1 is so very hard to work with.

My neighbor brought over her laptop and her young son has installed a BIOS password, but does not remember now what he set the password as!  We've tried all he can remember, but to no avail.

It fails with a system disabled code of 86006446.  If you could provide a means of unlocking this, it would be most appreciated!

Thank you
