What you mention about BIOS may be the solution. Before I did my system restore, I had tried to upgrade to 8.1 - my machine reverted to 8.0 and I worked for several days with Microsoft to get the situation corrected. Unfortunately I accidently got locked out of my machine and could virtually do nothing. Microsoft finally had to connect me back to HP telephone support who tried to get system restore to work - nor did Windows 8 discs sent to me by Microsoft work. The HP agent had me make several changes in more than BIOS to attempt to get things to work. I finally received restore discs from HP - so maybe things are not back to where they should be. The language in those menus is not clear to me (UEFI??) - so I may have to go back and get help to make sure if this is causing the error. I think the old menus just had one option - to boot from a CD. Now there is more language in all the menus. Several menus had to be accessed to get my computer to even boot up the discs properly - so I don't know if things like that correct themselves in system restore.
