I have had my 4545S for almost a year now, and am a technet subscriber and ran 8.1 prior to public release and have been trying to solve this trouble since before 8.1 was released to the general public. I have even gone as far as to try different hard drives (as I use a SSD in my 4545S) different RAM, HP Windows 8, Microsoft's Retail Windows 8, MS Retail 8.1, etc, etc. Any way around it I will experience the lock ups under 8.1. I have over 15 years experience in IT Support, and my laptop runs fine with Windows 8 or 7 installed, so I do not beleive there is a hardware issue of any sort (I've even tested the hardware with no troubles) I have observed my display adaptor fail once the lock up releases control, I am not going to say it is the display adaptor drivers, but it is the only observation I can contribute to a cause. I have tried AMD's drivers, AMD's beta Drivers, HP's drivers, nothing seems to fully resolve this lock up problem. I had at one point disabled the swap file as a video on youtube suggested it may resolve this issue, it did seem to help, but still sometimes I'd have lock ups just as frequent as before, so I feel that was just dumn luck. I rolled back to Windows 7 as I do use this laptop for production, and own a Surface RT I will use for my Windows 8 apps.
