HP ENVY Ultrabook 4t running latest Windows 8 version

Symptoms: Random "strange things" happening over the past week or so and then culminating with being unable to open any apps in the middle of an afternoon session working with photos. Had been working for a couple of hours.
Actions taken so far: Tried to reboot and the HP startup screen would appear but Windows never started. Tried this multiple times with the same result. Was able to use Escape to get to the startup Options menu and ran some of the system/component diagnostics all of which passed. Wasn't able to get to the bootup option (F11) so couldn't try booting from my recovery discs. Tried to run the "in-depth" memory test which was about 30 minutes in when I walked away . Came back to a "dead" laptop -Black screen and not responding to power switch although the wifi key LED will flash white once and pause for three seconds then flash white one more time when the power switch is depressed. Have tried with power cord and without but it seems completely dead now other than LED flashing.
Can anyone tell me what the problem might be so I can decide if it's worth trying to get it repaired?
