For HP HDDs Self Hard drive test in System Diagnostics are the best. Didn't that just give you fail in both quick & full tests!?
You should be able to purchase a internal HDD and use the recovery disks (preferrably ones ordered from HP rather than made from the system) to restore the factory image.
NOTE: get a HDD of at least the same size if you plan to use HP recovery disks. Some disks have issues working with smaller HDDs.
