I suspect that the trigger for this problem is a connector getting too hot because the heat sink air vents are blocked with dust.
This laptop makes it unusually easy to access these air vents, there is little chance of breaking anything:
Remove the battery
Slide the battery release latch all the way over to the unlocked position and push the bottom cover of the PC towards the front, lift it off.
There are two tiny cross head screws to remove, one each side of the cooling fan. One is a bit fiddly to get at, hidden under an HP label. A magnetic screwdriver will definitely help.
Move the fan out of the way and clean away the dust.
Reassemble.
