Hello GLENDAGIRL,
It appears that you're having an issue with the Notebook going into sleep mode, upon trying to use it again it's beeping (once). I will try to help you wit this.
As a reference source and something that may help you, I'll start with providing you this document: Computer Does Not Start and the LEDs Blink or the Computer Beeps.
To answer your question, yes there should be 5 blinks to indicate a system board issue.
It would be 5 quick consecutive blinks, followed by a pause and then the blinks repeating. You would notice the pause between sets of blinks.
A question I have for you, does this occur only from "sleep mode"?
If you restart the Notebook manually, will it load into Windows with no issues?
If this is only occurring from sleep/hibernation the "beep codes" don't apply. The beep at that time would just indicate the systems locked up, not a specific hardware failure. Which indicates something isn't working correctly on the Notebook. That could be the OS, or any other piece of hardware.
You can then check hardware by following the steps in this document: Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 7, Vista).
Please let me know if any of that is able to help you.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.
