spectre xt screen frozen at starting windows

My spectre xt is frozen on the 'starting windows'. I think this was triggered by my unplugging an externally attached hard drive while starting up the spectre xt. In a laptop I would solve this problem by unplugging the machine and removing its battery then restarting. I cannot see any way to do this with the spectre. Can you advise how to resolve the problem?
