Hello Aseries...
This is an interesting catch on your part! I'm not sure what the Crucial device is doing to cause the conflict. A question: do you have the HP UEFI diagnostics installed? I'm assuming so, since you're indicating that the BIOS update fails on reboot (presumably the reboot into the UEFI BIOS update application).
If you do have the HP UEFI Support Environment installed, you might try going into the Advanced Diagnostics on boot (F2) and selecting the option to update the BIOS from there. If all else fails, temporarily rename the Hewlett-Packard folder (Windows 7) or HP folder (Windows 8) on the tools partition (example - add a "_temp" suffix to the folder name). Then, re-run the BIOS update. This should force the update to occur in Windows instead of UEFI. The disadvantage here is that the update happens in Windows (not the best environment for firmware updates IMHO), and the BIOS recovery files on your tools partition will not be updated. IMPORTANT: to make sure you can use the UEFI Support Environment tools in the future, please change the folder name back to the original!
I hope this helps. Good luck!
