A quick update - although the laptop wont install from DVD, i noticed that when USB was included in the boot list it would say no bootable USB image found. This led me to think that at least it is aknowledging that the USB is part of the process, something it wasn't doing with the DVD drive.
I set up my USB drive to be bootable and added my OS, plugged it in laptop and low and behold it picked it up no problem. I am happy to say that win7 is installing this very minute !!
