HP Envy 4-1215dx won't boot windows 10

After installing a windows 10 update, my friends laptop would not connect to the internet.  Today I saw an article that says a recent update broke dhcp, but the problem now is after rebooting her laptop, it gets a blue screen everytime she tries to boot saying

"your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart"

stop code: SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED"

What failed: iaStorA.sys

We can get to the boot (?) menu by hitting the esc key at powerup, but cannot enter system recovery, setup bios or boot device options.  If any of those are selected, we get the same blue screen.

We are able to enter and run diagnostics from that menu and we did a bios recovery by holding down the windows key and "B".

I wanted to try to boot to a windows 10 usb drive to attempt recovery or try manually replacing the iaStorA.sys file, but can't change the boot order.

Why can't we enter the bios setup or change the boot order?  Everything is pointing to a windows problem, but why would that cause an error when trying to enter the bios?

Hi,

Normally you can carry your laptop to ANY country in the world and don't worry about voltage. All you need is a tourist adapter.

BUT to be sure is to be sure, just turn the charger up-side-down, you should see 110V-240Votherwise you can't use your machine in Thailand  without a proper adapter.

Regards.

Yes you just need a plug adapter. The charger "brick" is international and can accept input current from something like 110v to 240v. It says that on the label but on the chromebooks the chargers are small and the print is microscopic.

Hello Steve,

Please try this Password :  boavmv  or  xdsypfk

Steps to be followed:

1. Use the unlock code posted above to enter the BIOS

2. Disable all passwords that are enabled

3. If asked for current password - type the unlock code

4. For new password, just press ENTER key

5. Repeat the same for verify password column.

6. Then leave the BIOS by saving & exit option to save the changes.

BIOS Flashing corrupted BIOS

Hi, So I've owned this laptop for about 2 years.  About 1 month ago, the laptop had a corrupted BIOS that I was unable to restore, and the thread describing that in detail can be found here: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Boot-and-Lockup/Laptop-BIOS-Corrupted-probably/m-p/5735383#M95370

Since then, I have ordered a new motherboard and installed it in the computer. It started up and worked perfectly, but wouldn't recognize the battery and only operated when plugged in. So, I thought that I would update the BIOS to see if that would fix the battery issue. I downloaded the HP executable for the BIOS and ran it. Windows did some stuff (I forget the exact details), and then the computer rebooted. It displayed a simple blue box that said it was flashing the BIOS. I played a game on my other computer for ~30 minutes then came back to the laptop.  This time, there was a completely blank screen. I attempted to move the mouse, and do anything reasonably expected to wake the computer from sleep, because the power LED was still on.  I then pushed the power button until it shut off, and then tried to power it on. It resulted in the exact same symptoms as the thread I linked above.

I have tried unplugging the computer (which removes all power because the battery won't work), using both key combinations to try to restore the BIOS from the original hard drive, and using both key combinations to try to restore the BIOS from a USB drive with a slightly older than latest BIOS.

As of right now, the laptop is all original hardware, except for the motherboard and CMOS battery.

Hi ,

Thanks for the post,

I see you are getting an error on startup "manufacturing programming mode is in unlock mode". I would like to help.

Was there any hardware service or part replaced on the computer.

Are you able to boot to BIOS by tapping F10 on startup?

Did you run any diagnostics on the computer?

You can download the latest version of BIOS from our website www.hp.com/drivers and install it on the computer using a USB drive.

Refer, this post on our forums for assistance.

You can also contact our phone support and provide the CT number of the notebook printed on the bottom of the computer for assistance.

I found that if I stop using it, unplug it and let the battery completely run down, then plug it back it it works again.

Elitebook flashing power, wifi, mute buttons

Laptop flashes the power, wifi, and mute buttons. The flashing goes beyond 20 flashes and the frequency is few seconds. The power adapter is good and I have confirmed power to the board. If I remove the RAM I get the caps lock button to flash 3 times, indicating bad memory. With the memory installed all I get is flashing lights.
