Can not turn on Notebook with power button, only after removing battery an bios-battery

Hi,

short story aboat my problem. Okay, not very short, but i try to include all details.

after some water damage over the keyboad (following a complete drying of the parts) the notebook worked fine for a couple of weeks.
Then, after some HP updates, the PC was not able to turn on anymore. Power LED was lightning, fan was blowing full speed, but screen was black. This goes on for a few second, then everything off, and a few seconds later everything startet again. This was looping until the battery was emty, no way to stop it.

After that the device could not be turned on anymore. But after connecting the charger,
Power-Switch, CapsLock and Power-Jack Leds were on at the same time, then first power-jack-led went of, and a second later power-switch and capslock. Then everything went on again. Loops continously, while screen black and no fan, no beeps. No reaction to pressing the any key or power switch.

Well, i disassembled the complete device to check for visible damages from the water. Nothing. I also measured the power-switch, but its all right. Stripped everything down, removing battery and bios-buffer battery. (By the way: its a realy, realy bad design that you have to disassemble the complete device to the core to change bios-battery or disconnect main battery. Shame on you, Hp for this.)

After connecting the battery again to the main board (keyboard, card-reader-board, touchpad etc was still disconnected.) the device was booting like a charm. After putting everything together, i checked everything, runned some stress tests but everything was working.

But after i turned off the pc, i was not able to turn it on again. Everything black and dead.

So i disassembled again, removed the batterys, connected an external keyboard, put the batterys back again and the thing started easyly. I did all the self-test provided in the bios, everything was fine.

Windows also booted fine. After windows was running, i tried to turn it off with the power button. Also worked (conlusion: the button itself is working).
But as soon as it was of, i was not able to turn it on again. Only by disassemling and removing bios and main battery.
Im very fast now in disassembling the device, feeling a litte like dr. Frankenstein. But its a very inconvinient way to turn on this thing.

Anybody of you has any idears what might be wrong? Just always having the thing powered on is a possibility, but not a real solution ;).

Thanks for reading and sorry for my sloppy english. I hope you were able to understand everything.

Best Regards,

Felix

So my laptop hasn't been working the last two days. Whenever I turn my laptop on it blinks the HP logo on and off but it doesn't progress to the next screen. I've literally tried almost everything. If I can get any help it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi:

You may want to try to get into windows and back up any files you don't want to lose.

Then eventually (pretty soon), you will have to replace the hard drive and reinstall the operating system.

Below is the link to the service manual.  The HDD R & R procedure can be found in chapter 6.

That seems a universal problem that happens on F.31 BIOS + win10 1809. Ive downgraded to 1803. F.31 BIOS is not a good version.

i bought this laptop 6 months back and it was all working perfectly with Windows 8.1 until I upgraded it to Windows 10. When i shut it down everything turns off except for the power light and it keeps on forever. In order to turn the light off i have to press and hold power button for around 6-7 seconds and then it turns off. i tried updating the bios with windows bios because Windows 10 BIOS is not available for my pc. Please help, i will be grateful.

Not sure what you mean by each time.If you mean each time the machine is rebooted or the OS reinstalled, no. Once the BIOS is changed to Legacy the pin is only needed on the first startup after the change.

Sadly to say: Most of the time the 24 char failure id indicates the HDD is failing and it needs to be replaced. Is it still under warranty ? If Yes, please call HP for a replacement.

In the US:

    http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

or HP technical support: 800-474-6836. If you live outside the US/Canada Region please click the link below to get the support number for your region.

Since your machine previously ran Windows 10 (???), you can do a clean install W10 for free by using the media creation tool at the link below.

  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

The tool will allow you to make a bootable installation media (USB/DVD) and you can use installation media to install.

During the installation process if you are asked to enter a product key, check the 'Skip' box and W10 will install and then automatically activate once you are connected to the internet using the key embedded in BIOS of your machine.

Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page.

BIOS Admin password locked

Hi All,

A former employer has locked the BIOS with an Administrator password and nobody knows what it is. I now have to wipe the laptop and load a new OS for a new employee. I used Rufus to create a windows 10 bootable image but seems i cannot boot to any other media except the notebook hdd itself as i figured the boot sequence might have been messed with as well. So I tried to reset the CMOS by opening the laptop but saw that it was wrapped up so did not open it, instead i disconnected the plug like cable that was connected to it. Still the password is present. Is there any other way to reset the BIOS ? I also tried updating the bios through a usb by pressing ctrl + b and it updated the BIOS but still it did not help (saw this after doing some google research).

Please any help wil be appreciated, just need to get this laptop in working condition for our new employee.

Thank you in advance.

Oh wait! I just remembered! On the SMART check it said Passed but on the real time taking check it said Failure. Does this still mean the HDD is broken?

Thanks Lil_Boy_Blue.  Unfortunately the webpage you linked tells me how to restore my bios.  As I explained in my original post, I have already done that.

My question is not how to restore my bios.  My post was to inform HP that their BIOS update killed my computer and they need to fix the BIOS update so that people like me can try to install it again.  And so I am trying to find out how to bring my post to the attention of HP and how to know when there is a corrected version of the BIOS update that is ready to try installing.

Stephen
