Laptop freezes after starting

$

Hi,

My laptop will start as normal, but a few seconds after I log on everything will freeze - I can move the mouse around but it doesn't register when I click on anything. I also get a series of strange messages like this:Message 1.PNG

I can turn the laptop off and then on again to get round this problem, but this is very time consuming and annoying. Any help with the issue will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

Hi

Well run anti-malware, anti-virus etc.

Make backups and Recovery Media.

Consider a Factory Fresh install.

Try disabling Fast Start-Up and do a clean shutdown.

Attempt to start in Safe Mode.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode

Dont connect to a network and run the A/V scans while in safe mode if you can.

Try this... Turn off the computer, press and hold the PWR button for 4 seconds.

Then - Leave only keyboard and mouse connected, disconnect all externally connected
devices such as Docking Station, USB storage devices, displays, and printers.
Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

Next - Press and Hold the Power button for 15 seconds to Hard Reset.

AND/OR - Power on your PC, press Esc (repeatedly), then F2 at the prompt.
Choose System Tests (Fast Test does a 4 minute hardware check).

AND/OR - Windows Logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B

AND/OR - If you’re using multiple displays, try projecting video to a different monitor.
Press the Windows Logo key + P, select a display, and then press Enter.

If in doubt please ask.

3) Wait for 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not to a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Step 2 BIOS Restore -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Hold down the Windows and B button together while the computer is still turned off.
3) Turn on the computer and continue to hold the Windows and B button until a BIOS Recovery screen appears.

4) Follow on-screen instructions and click on OK

Step 3 System Restore -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F11 once for System Recovery.
4) Choose the Keyboard Layout.
5) Click on Troubleshoot.
6) Go to Recovery Manager and click on System Restore.
7) Choose a Restore point or a Restore date when the computer was working fine.
8) Click on OK to initialize the System Restore.

If the restore fails, test the Hard Drive.

Step 4 Hard Drive Test -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) Go to Component test.
5) From the list, run the Hard Drive (extensive) test.

If the test passed, try re-installing the operating system.

Step 5 System Recovery -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F11 once for System Recovery.
4) Choose the Keyboard Layout.
5) Click on Troubleshoot.
6) Go to Recovery Manager and click on System Recovery.

Note : System Recovery will delete everything that you had saved or installed on the computer. You might be prompted to back-up the data.

Hope this helps!

Let me know how that goes.

HP Spectre x360 Won't Turn On

Like many others here on the forum, my HP Spectre x360 died one month after the warranty expired.  I only had it four months.  I have followed troubleshooting from HP support.  Nothing works.  Appears to be motherboard issue that everyone else is having.  Does anyone know of any class action lawsuit since HP won't recall the computers and instead wants you to pay 400-800 dollars to repair it?  Other posts say the motherboard fails again after having it repaired.

HP ProtectTools Security Manager - won't reawaken all the way after being closed

HP 4540s, Windows 7 Professional, 64-bit. This is a weird pickle.

I upgraded from a 256 GB SSD to a 1 TB HD 2 days ago. Used clone software to clone the HDs (I've done this several times). Now when I start the computer everything is fine, but when I close and reopen it almost never takes me to the panel that lets me (a) click on the icon to get back to W7 or (b) enter a password - it's just the background where the icon/password field shows up.

When I go to HP ProtectTools Security Manager, I see that it isn't starting - I think therefore that the PC doesn't 'know' what credentials it should be waiting for. It just says, "Please Wait" - "Loading Applications" and the blue bar goes about 20% across the panel and it just sits there.

I would think that deleting HP ProtectTools Security Manager is the way to go, but that concerns me and think it might get me to an irreversible state where the computer won't ever get me to the OS. I wanted to test drive it by just turning off the process in Task Manager, but since the application never completely starts, the process doesn't show up in Task Manager.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance -

BS

Hi:

Enter any BIOS P/W three times, and the PC should generate a system disabled code.

Please post the code you receive including the small letter 'i' if applicable.

Boot Device Not Found

Hi,

I was trying to complete reset my laptop through recovery manager and it froze midway. I restarted the computer and now I have a black screen saying “boot device not found, please install an operating system on your hard drive, hard drive (3f0), F2 system diagnostics”. I’ve searched online for solutions and nothing seems to work. I would be really grateful if someone can help.

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is not booting to Windows.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

While you respond to that, I would like to inform you that based on the error you are getting, it looks like the data on the computer is corrupt and it is causing the operating system to load correctly.

Data corruption happens due to bad programs, Malware or poor/unlicensed software’s.

I recommend you remove the hard drive from the computer and connect it to a working computer and backup all the data. Then follow the below steps and check if the issue is resolved.

1. Turn off the computer.

2. Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.

3. Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices, such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.

4. Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.

5. Remove the battery from the battery compartment.

6. Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.

7. Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.

8. Press the Power button to turn on the computer.

9. On the Options screen, select Continue and continue to Windows 10.

10. If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, then press the Enter key.

11. Reconnect each of the peripheral devices.

If you continue facing the issue, follow the steps in the below article.

The message "boot device not found" could mean the hard drive is OK but the boot manager is corrupted or missing.  Since the recovery did not complete, do the F2 system diagnostics to make sure the hard drive did not fail.  If the hard drive is OK, you can either reinstall Windows 10 from the Recovery Manager or with the media from here

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

With a working PC, scroll down to the "Using the tool to create installation media" and follow the directions.  Then reinstall Windows 10 using that new media.

I downloaded and installed the video driver from the link you gave me. Computer restarted and i get bluescreen at startup now.

I also downloaded the support assistant and ran the driver updater, and did not reveal any drivers that needed updating. The two solutions you provided did not work.
