External HDD not showing up after restart in boot manager

Hello! I've bought my HP today (HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop 15-cx0xxx) and I was looking to install Kali Linux on an external HDD. After going through the installation I've rebooted multiple times and each time the option 'UEFI boot manager WD My Passport' has shown up and I was able to boot into it without any problems. But after restarting the device, removing the USB and booting into Windows the option doesn't show up anymore in the Boot Manager. Only Legacy mode shows up but this won't work and causes 'No bootable device found' error.

I have tried a variety of things including: Enabling/disabling secure boot, enabling/disabling Legacy, tried different USB ports without success and I'm very confused as to what is causing this issue. The drive works most certainly as I'm able to boot into it from another laptop. If anybody has any idea it would be much appreciated!

My laptop is refusing to turn on. When I plug in the AC adapter, the indicator light comes on for a few seconds, then turns off. I’ve tried to boot from AC power with the battery removed with no luck. The front battery indicator light is blinking. Any suggestions? I did back it up, but I need specific files and have moved to a new laptop with a different OS.

Sorry, but any time a laptop simply refuses to turn on, that tend to indicate a serious hardware failure.

Software failures invariably present with error messages of some kind on the screen, such as No Operating System or No Boot Device. In these cases, reinstalling the OS from media such as DVD or USB fixes the first; rebuilding the boot records using various utilities fixes the second.

There are these interactive diagnostic routines you can run from another PC that will attempt to walk you through some steps to determine the source(s) of the problem: http://hp.dezide.com/ts/start.jsp?guide=NoPowerorBootIssues.net&section=ccweb&as=true&SFS=tdoc

The problem is that we HERE, have no way of diagnosing or repairing hardware problems.

Since your PC is still under the original one-year HP warranty, or if you have purchased an extended warranty from HP and this is still valid, then you should contact HP Customer Support to see about having it repaired or replaced under warranty.

Sorry, but your claim that the laptop was an "incomplete product" is simply UNTRUE.

Microsoft comes out with Windows Updates literally every week -- typically known as Patch Tuesday.

Even if the PC was built this Monday and you bought it the same day, it would still be seeing Windows Updates the very next day!

Plus, the OEM build these PCs and they set on shelves in stores or in warehouses for weeks, or even months, before someone finally purchases them.  The OEMs have absolutely NO CONTROL over when a particular PC is going to get bought and delivered. So, expecting them to have every PC update to date, is totally unreasonable.

In addition, it was Microsoft that decided, starting with Win10, that folks can't refuse or disable Windows Updates anymore, not HP.  So, you can not hold HP responsible for a decision that MS has made.

If I understand your problems correctly, the LED light comes on but the laptop does not actually power on, nor is there any display on the screen -- correct?

If that is true, any time a laptop simply refuses to turn on, that tend to indicate a serious hardware failure.

Were you able to copy off the files you needed to the new laptop?

If you did not get them all, my priority would be to do that, following these instructions:

1) Remove the hard drive from the old PC
2) Purchase a USB-to-Hard Driver adapter kit (like the one illustrated below)

 USB-Drive-Adapter.jpg

3) Connect the old drive to the working PC using that adapter
4) Try to retrieve the files and folders you want to save from the old drive and copy them to the new PC.

If this does not work, then you need to do the following:
1) Download and install this utility on a working PC http://www.majorgeeks.com/news/story/recover_data_in_3_steps_with_minitool_power_data_recovery_free_edition.html
2) Run the data recovery utility to see what can be retrieved from the old drive.

As to the old PC, any time a laptop simply refuses to turn on, that tend to indicate a serious hardware failure.

Software failures invariably present with error messages of some kind on the screen, such as No Operating System or No Boot Device. In these cases, reinstalling the OS from media such as DVD or USB fixes the first; rebuilding the boot records using various utilities fixes the second.

Can you confirm that the fan is NOT running?  If so, then this is a very serious problem, as the laptop will overheat very quickly and either it will shut down, or the processor will burn out -- both of which basically render it unusable.

Replacing a fan can range from easy to very, very hard, depending on how much disassembly you have to do to get at the fan and replace it.

If you're not experienced in doing that, you can easily damage fragile cables and connectors -- so I would advise strongly against attempting this on your own.

For estimates on what it would cost to replace the fan, you would need to contact an HP Repair or Service Center.

The 16 White flashes does not specify which Hardware failed. But this is known as a No Post situation and generally it is an issue with the Motherboard.

Thank you

No changes that I know of.  I do all my own maintenance as i live in a small town.  I get one ssfromss Sarah Smith that asks for a pin number and another that asks for a password.  I didn't want to have to log in at all at startup so I think I was trying to fix it.  It's been a while.  That may be the reason everything double loads.  So gmail, hotmail and facebook will load and then load again right away.

Thanks for contacting me.

Thanks for the response.

In this case I would recommend you to try performing a push button reset but please take a back up of the data before trying this, since it would take it back to the factory settings.

Keep me posted. :)

HP Zbook 17 g2 system board failure

So i've had my laptop for a little over a year now but after I messed with some boot settings in the bios all went wrong. It all started whenwI changed some boot options, something about switching legacy to uefi.

After I had done that, the laptop wouldn't read my hdd anymore so I'd thought I would just go ahead and change it back in the  bios but everytime I tried to enter it, it would highlight the option (which was f8) but then just sit theee and never load the bios so I'd thought about reseting the bios, taking out the cmos battery, removing and putting the memory back on, just about everything you can think of. At the end of the day i was getting 4blinks which referred to the memory so I stopped messing with it and the next day i opened itiup completely and reseated the memory but then this led to me getting 5 blinks. Its been a couple days since I've tried fixing it and I just want know if there may be something else I can attempt before I buy a new board (hesitant on buying a new board because I don't think the current one I have is messed up)
