Laptop screen flickers with noise and will not startup, works in safe mode.

I was using my laptop yesterday with no issues.
I had left it on while I was out of the room for a little while. When I came back in, I plugged in my phone USB cable to charge my phone. I've done this countless times in the past so I don't know if it has anything to do with this or not, but just giving all the details.
When I plugged it in, the laptop registered the phone and then the screen went crazy... Lots of patches of noise appeared on the screen, followed by horizontal lines. Then the laptop went to the blue screen of death and shut down.
I turned it back on, and it said it needed to do a startup repair nothing weird at this point.
When I accepted the startup repair it began, but the screen came back up with the strange little patches of noise and the lines all over the screen, and the screen was flashing. Startup repair finished and the laptop came on as normal. I opened up my browser and had a little play around. Patches of noise appeared again, the screen went black, then came back on again, and it said the display driver had stopped and recovered.
At this point I turned the laptop off again and left it a few hours.
When I went to turn it back on later in the day, it came up with a black screen for a while. Eventually it started up, but when it got to the welcome screen, I got a load of noise and a pixellated background which flashed between green and pink. This went on for a good five minutes or so and then the laptop shut down.
I turned it on again and when it gave me the option I turned it on in safe mode and not a thing happened.
So with it working fine in safe mode I'm thinking perhaps software or drivers might be the issue but I really don't know.
I tried to run the system restore while in safe mode but it simply didn't open, and I have not yet tried it in safe mode with networking.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

In that case, remove the hard drive - see Page 40 of your Maintenance & Service Guide - and check if the halt code remains static with the drive absent.  If it does, leave the drive out and post back with the halt code.

Hi Zinou,

I have used CrystalDiskMark v6 free tool to invoke diagnostics, and here's the log/report created from running it.

Not sure if it'll help with anything. Perhaps it's best to take the laptop back to the retailer and ask for a replacement!?

Hi Zinou,

Here's the report from running the Crystal Disk Info check.

Hi

Step 1 backup your DATA.

Step 2 Is there a Restore Point?

Step 3 Do a System Diagnostic.

From here it is a case of experimentation.

Hard Reset?  -  Press and Hold the PWR off button for 4 seconds to force a PWR off.

Unplug from the wall.  If you see a battery compartment door, your computer has a removable battery. Remove the battery.

This is valid for most notebooks;

Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to complete the reset.

Re-insert any battery you removed.

AN F11 may well solve the problem by reverting to Factory Fresh, but will wipe your data.

If in doubt please ask.

The last time I used the laptop was to run HP update tools program and run Windows updates.
Several days later I went to start the machine and It would not boot.
The 1 year Warranty had expired the day beforeSmiley Sad

Error message:

Boot device failed.

Options tried
.
Reset  BIOS to defaults
Ran the extensive system test from F2 (passed everything including disk tests)
F11 recovery (errors with "boot device failed")
Hard reset
Removing rtc battery
Removing both drives and reseating
Ran Windows 10 repair tool from USB and it failed any of the actions requested (drive repair etc)

I can only boot from the Windows 10 USB when legacy mode is enabled. If I try to Boot from it using UEFI from the F9 boot selection menu it errors with "boot device failed".
I used the command prompt and was able to see the drives and list the contents everything seems to be in the right places.
I tried insatlling windows 10 but it says cant install on the drives because they are using GPT.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi

Welcome to the HP Support forum!

This is happening because Windows cannot start/boot .It may be caused due to simple Windows hung, hardware problem (e.g. your HDD) or it may be caused by faulty Windows Update, some other faulty update/driver, corrupted bootloader / Boot Configuration Data in Windows etc....

1. Try hard restart/hard reset.

Press the power on-button on your PC and hold it for about 5-10 seconds until your computer powers off completely.

Remove and unplug any external periferals and accessories.

Press once the power-on button to turn on the PC and wait if it will start now. Wait...

If it still fails to load properly, go ahead with the next steps

2. Perform some basic hardware checks to rule out hardware problem

- Please, shutdown the computer using the power button (pressed and hold for a few seconds until PC powers off)

- Power the computer back on.

As soon as you press the power-on button, immediately begin hitting the Esc button (like tap-tap-tap) before any logo appears. This should open a HP Startup Menu

- Choose F2 to open System Diagnostics. Follow the on-screen instructions to perform System Test >> Quick test.

This will check major hardware componets for issue (do it just in case) . Here is more info >> http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259#AbT1

If there are no system checks/no quick tests, perform HDD (hard disk drive) and RAM check (memory check).

Let me know the test results. If the tests pass without issues, continue. If not, please, let me know

3. Repeat steps 1-2 above but when HP Startup menu opens, please choose F11 for System Recovery options.

The computer should boot from it's recovery partition to open you various recovery options. Note, that F11 option will only work if the recovery partition is there (not deleted) and intact. From there, you have prenty of options to choose from. Every HP computer comes with recovery partition present to assist in tough moments.

Please, perform  System Restore  first in an attempt to fix the issue and "turn back time". Please, restore back to previous days (restore point) where the issue was not present. Here is more info:

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. Provide your feedback/reply.

BIOS update .exe crashes everytime you try to run it

I'm trying to fix a friends laptop that won't boot, and they don't know much about computers so I do not know the OS on this thing, other than it is Windows, from the age of the laptop, likely 7 or above.

Laptop will not boot.  won't even display the option to enter BIOS and select boot options or anything.  Just a blank screen, and error code LED/beeps.

2 flashes on caps lock key LED.  research leads me to believe it's bad BIOS.  So I try the keyboard inputs suggested by HP suport pages.  CTRL+B, or CTRL+V.  Still nothing.

HP Support pages then say to download and run the BIOS .exe and make a bootable USB.  since I don't know the OS I downloaded and tried the .exe for 7, 8.1, and 10.  All 3 of them crash.  I have tried to load the .exe's from 3 different computers (all running Win 10.  2 are DELL, and one is a custom build with ASROCK MOBO)  and it still fails to run, and crashes at various points depending which computer I tried to run it on.  This .exe is supposed to let me make a bootable USB but I can't run it, even if you run as administrator.

Any ideas how I am supposed to get a bootable BIOS file to fix the BIOS on this computer when the files you download from HP will not run?  Do I have to run it on another HP or something to make it work?  this doesn't make sense.

I meant WINDOWS KEY+B or V.

Also product specs say it should be Win 8.1.  But either way the bios file crashes, usually after you accept the EULA and click next.

Hi

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.

I see that you are trying to install an SSD Hard drive in your Notebook.

The HP Pavilion dv5-1204em is an older Model and you cannot install an SSD Hard drive in it.

Thank you. Smiley Happy

Encrypted drive no longer shows decrypt authentication screen on startup

HOW ENCRYPTION USED TO WORK:

A couple of months ago I enabled HP Drive Encryption on my laptop. It all worked fine: when I booted the laptop I would briefly see the HP logo, followed by the HP Drive Encryption login screen. I would then enter my password to decrypt the drive. After that I would see GRUB from where I could pick an OS to boot.

WHAT I DID TO BREAK ENCRYPTION:

This laptop is dual boot (Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 7). It has been dual boot long before I enabled drive encryption. But recently I did an Ubuntu update. During this update I vaguely remember it asking me to select a setting for GRUB (the bootloader that I use since I have dual boot). (It might not have mentioned something about GRUB, it could have been something similar (BIOS related). I'm sorry I don't remember.)

HOW ENCRYPTION IS NOW BROKEN:
After this Ubuntu update when I restarted the laptop, it would show me the HP logo (just like before), but then it would skip the HP Drive Encryption login screen and go straight to the GRUB bootloader.

From there if I would try to start Windows 7, it would go into repair mode. This is obvious since the drive was never decrypted.

WHAT I TRIED SO FAR:

  • I have tried changing the active partition on the laptop's hard drive. (I extracted the hard drive from the laptop and used a docking station to view it from another computer. After that I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to set another partition to active. I would then insert the hard drive back into the laptop to boot it.) The laptop would still boot but would not show me the decrypt authentication screen.
  • I have also tried to fix the issue by booting the laptop via an USB on which I burned the SDWinPEx64.iso file. From there I would run TBLauncher.exe, but none of the drives showed up as locked in this tool. I tried to fix the drives not showing up as locked by using SDWmgRecovery.exe. But this tool requires there to be an WinMagicSECURDOC.WMG file on the hard drive, which I couldn't find (and I don't there there ever was one).
  • On top of that I tried changing many settings in the BIOS, but nothing seemed to help.

OTHER INFO:

I still know the password that I used when I would decrypt the drive. I also still have a .dat file that I had to make when setting up drive encryption. I assume this file contains a recovery key for when I would forget the password.

I hope someone can help me out. If you need more info then please tell me.

none of these steps will do anything.

On a normal startup, you usually get a message flash for the F2, or F10, F11 option.

nothing displays here.  It won't even get that far.  I cannot get into the BIOS or do anything.  I only get a black/blank screen and after a few minutes error codes in the form of Beeps, and a flashing LED on the caps Lock button.

When you look up these codes in HP support, it says it's a BIOS issue.  And after all of their usual steps failed, I tried to download the BIOS update file and make a bootable BIOS USB to force the laptop into the BIOS so I can recover the BIOS.

Problem is, no matter what computer I try to run the file on to make said bootable USB, it crashes before i get to the option selection screen.

What I need is a BIOS USB, how do I get one if the file (.exe) from HP does not work?

I got it from the software/drivers page.

My laptop is 4 months old and randomly powers off. Today it powered off and the fan started running loudly. I held down the power button to reset and since then I have been unable to switch it on and power it back up. It appears to happen generally during slight movement such as someone getting off the sofa beside me.

How to remove bios password on a Probook 450 G0

$

Hello,

lets start with my problem. I have bought a second hand probook 450 G0 a week ago. The problem is that i can not format it, because even if there is a fully installed copy of windows on the hard-drive i get the message- Could not find any bootable image. The only thing i managed to boot is the Live version of Linux ubuntu from a Usb drive.

The problem must be some settings in the BIOS. And here comes the second problem. The bios is password protected and i dont know the password. I cant get a hold of the previous owner so im stuck on my own.

After a few days of research i figuret out that the bios password is saved on a EEPROM chip and cant be reset with the usual tricks. I also saw a few people suggesting i should contact hp support which could help me with a custom .bin file to remove the password. But i had no luck getting in touch with such a person over there support page.

So im wondering if any-one here has an idea how to get rid of the bios password on my probook 450 G0?

Other helpfull info:

Serial: 2CE 3362937

Bios version: 68IRF Ver. F.60

Thank you for any usefull information regarding my problem.
